Abandoned Moments: A Love Letter to Photography brings together more than four decades of photographs by Ed Kashi, from the late 1970s to the present, offering a different view of a photographer best known for his work as a photojournalist.
The book takes its title from Kashi’s idea of the “abandoned moment”: photographs made by letting go of some of the control normally involved in making an image. Instead of carefully composing through the viewfinder, Kashi allows movement, chance, intuition, and the energy of a situation to shape the photograph. What emerges can be unexpected, disorienting, humorous, or quietly beautiful.
The approach began when Kashi was a photography student in England and stayed with him throughout his career. Many of the photographs collected here were never intended for publication. They were made alongside assignments and projects, often outside the demands of editorial storytelling, and remained unseen for years.
Bringing these images together reveals another side of Kashi’s practice: less concerned with explaining a subject and more open to instinct, accident, gesture, and the possibilities of the photographic frame. Seen together, the photographs form an intimate record of how Kashi has looked at the world when he was simply following his instincts with a camera.
Published by Kehrer Verlag in 2021, Abandoned Moments includes 136 pages, with 42 color and 26 black-and-white photographs.
