Brasilia- A time capsule

My interest in the city of Brasília comes from a mixture of fascination and nostalgia for stories and representations of the future. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil’s capital was built in just four years in the middle of a desert, embodying the vision of the future that emerged in the 1960s.

The Pilot Plan, designed in 1957 by urban planner Lúcio Costa, coincided with the beginning of the Space Age and the launch of Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. It was the golden age of the Space Age, and Brasília, with its appearance of a flying saucer that had landed in the middle of nowhere, evokes both the nostalgia and the dream of a future frozen in time.

The case is unique in its scale—an entire city—and in its state of preservation. The city’s Pilot Plan has remained unchanged since Brasília was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A modernist temple fossilized in a utopian future, Brasília is a true time capsule.
