ANDREA MARTÍNEZ
(Brazil, 1982) Lives and works in Mexico City.
Mexican artist, photographer, and educator. She holds a degree in Arts from ENPEG La Esmeralda, with a specialization in photography.
Martínez’s practice centers on the fundamentals of photography, exploring light as idea, matter, and material. A fundamental aspect of her creative process is an ongoing exploration of the photographic medium itself, allowing her to shift light, color, and assumptions about the image into a subtle zone of disjuncture between what we see and what was actually in front of the camera.
Her work has been exhibited in Mexico and abroad at institutions including Houston Center for Photography in Houston, Texas, and Museo Experimental El Eco in Mexico City. She has been a two-time recipient of the FONCA Jóvenes Creadores grant in photography and has participated in artistic residencies including LKV in Norway (2023) and The Banff Centre in Canada (2013), among others.
Since 2015, she has incorporated teaching art and photography into her creative practice, working at public and private institutions including CENTRO University, the CEACO program at La Curtiduría, Centro de la Imagen, and La Esmeralda. Since 2021, she has been a member of Mexico’s Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte.
In 2024, she published the book ¿Dónde estás, luz?, in collaboration with Susana Santoyo, with Piedra Ediciones. In 2025, she was selected with the project Cordillera (Ninguna imagen olvida su origen) for the XXI Bienal de Fotografía at Centro de la Imagen.
